A significant market area for Carbex is shaft grounding. In addition to grounding carbon brushes, Carbex also supplies brush holders specifically designed for shaft grounding applications. When galvanic currents pass through a motor’s bearings, they can cause severe damage. The primary function of grounding brushes is to divert these currents away from the bearings, preventing electrical discharge and extending bearing life. If left unmanaged, galvanic currents can create microscopic pits and grooves, leading to increased friction, accelerated wear, and premature bearing failure.
For shaft grounding applications, metal-graphite brushes with a high metal content are typically used. Silver-graphite brushes are the preferred solution, as silver is less affected by oxidation and provides stable, low-resistance performance. Copper-graphite brushes can also be used in certain applications. However, pure metal-graphite brushes are not suitable for high peripheral speeds, as they cannot withstand such operating conditions.
At higher peripheral speeds, additional lubrication may be required. In these cases, Carbex recommends sandwich-type brushes, which combine graphite for lubrication with silver graphite for low electrical resistance, ensuring reliable grounding performance and extended component lifetime.
